Hey Jeff! Sorry,but I don't remember how long the bit was that we used. (Mines an '86 and we did this "alteration" about 3 years ago!) It was a fairly long bit and we stuck it directly into the hole in the tailpipe and turned it on! You have to push really hard. It was a very tough bit but we still damaged the end of it! Good luck!
